['njuː 'dʒəːnəlɪzəm; englisch »neuer Journalismus«] der, - -, Stilrichtung der amerikanischen Prosa, die seit etwa 1965 dem Zweifel an der Unterscheidung von Fakten und Fiktionen dadurch Rechnung zu tragen versucht, dass tatsächliche Ereignisse mit den Mitteln fiktionalen Erzählens dargestellt werden. Unter Rückgriff auf frühere Ansätze (S. Crane, J. Dos Passos) greift der New Journalism Themen aus dem Bereich der Massenkultur und kultureller Randbereiche auf, die vorher wenig Beachtung fanden. Bekannte Vertreter des New Journalism sind T. Capote mit »In cold blood« (1966; deutsch »Kaltblütig«), N. Mailer mit »The armies of the night« (1968; deutsch »Heere aus der Nacht«), Hunter S. Thompson (* 1939) mit »Fear and loathing in Las Vegas« (1971; deutsch »Angst und Schrecken in Las Vegas«) und T. K. Wolfe mit »The electric kool-aid acid test« (1968; deutsch »Unter Strom«).
